Video Wednesday Norway’s fascinating “Slow TV”

It’s television’s version of taking a deep breath…a very long, very slow, deep breath. It’s called “Slow TV,” and it’s a surprise smash-hit in Norway.

Millions tune in to watch live, unedited broadcasts of train journeys, ferry boat rides, firewood burning or people knitting for hours or days at a time. As Rune Moklebust, who helped conceive of Slow TV, explains to Seth Doane, the broadcasts simply reflect life: “Much of life itself is boring. But in-between, there are some exciting moments, and you just have to wait for them.”

  • What a wonderful idea. I’ll be back in Norway this September and get to experience some of these activities in real time.

    • Thanks for visiting Randall. September is a great time. The large crowds at the tourist spots are gone. Hope you have a great stay in Norway!

  • Slow TV is so very relaxing. When your mind is in chaos because your life is in chaos, it would be nice to sit and cruise down the beautiful fjord, just watching nature pass by. I love this video!

    • Thanks for commenting Judy. Slow TV is in a way a strange concept. I haven’t watched all the productions mentioned in this video. I did watch parts of the “Hurtigruten” production and that was amazing. You felt that you were onboard and got to see the sights.

  • I visited Norway in 2015. Recently discovered the footage of Norway In A Nutshell. We took that trip and the footage was like reliving our vacation. It also let me show my friends and relatives just how beautiful Norway really is.
