Life in general......

Friday finds: Week 20 – 2017

Here are a few websites I have cisited this week

I haven’t had much time to read this week. As the weather finally has turned nice we have put in some work in the garden. I have show up at work, and by the time you read this I am probably out of town.

First I want to share an article by Amy B. Cohen at Brotmanblog: A Family Journey. She tells about the strange reactions she got when she told friends that she was going to Germany. Read the article Why Germany?.

Tuesday’s Tip~Gettin’ by with Help from Our Friends – Carol Kostakos Petranek is from the Carolina Girl Genealogy blog by Cheri Hudson Passey. The article gives you ideas on how to connect with other genealogists. Although her research takes her to Greece, her tips will help those trying to locate ancestors in their native countries.

In the Hipster Historian, Becky Campbell tells the story Momma Went Missing: Carrie S. Nickles about when Carrie went missing from her home in Centralia, Washington — a little town just south of the state capital, Olympia.

Unwitting Drink of Death is the title of Michael Dyer at the Family Sleuther blog’s article. It tells the story of a terrible death resulting from what was meant to be a joke.

Amie Bowser Tennant’s article Top 5 Things You Didn’t Know About a Death Certificate in the RootsBid blog tells us that we can glean a lot of information from that one piece of paper.

In The Legal Genealogist blog, Judy G. Russell addresses the basic fundamental reason why we as genealogists cite our sources. Read her article A citation sigh.

Here are some other blogs that presents links under the “finds” meme:

If you enjoy my reflections on genealogy, be sure to follow me on twitter. I am also on Instagram where I share pictures from Norway, often with a genealogy theme. Click here to reach me. You can subscribe to this blog by leaving your email address in the subscription field on the front page.

Have a great weekend!

  • I am shocked that anyone would find it strange in 2017, or even years before that, that someone is vacationing in Germany! Today’s Germany is hardly the Germany of the 1930’s and 1940’s. The generation responsible for the war and terrible atrocities are pretty much gone. Their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have made Germany a model country in the world. Except for the Neo-Nazi’s who exist in every country, today’s Germans have long repudiated the war years and the atrocities. I lived in Germany for fifteen years and quite frankly, I would rather live there now than in my own country. I cannot begin to understand the pain of the Jewish community but hope they understand that Germany 2017 is not Germany 1937-1945.

    • My experience is that the older the person, the more likely they had that response—that is, those who lived through World War II and the Holocaust or lost family in the war or the Holocaust.

  • Cheri Hudson Passey’s blog is CAROLINA Girl not California Girl. Just thought you might want to make a correction.

  • Thanks for pointing that out. I make the strangest mistakes sometimes. I have corrected the article.
