Video Wednesday: Train Driver’s View: Winter on the Flåm Line

Come along  in a winter trainride from Flåm up to Myrdal

Many tourists visits Flåm every year. I must admit that I have never been in Flåm. In spite of a somewhat annoying windshield viper it is quite fascinating to view this winter voyage from the train driver’s seat.

Winter has finally hit the steepest normal gauge railway in northern Europe.

With its gradient of 1:18 (55‰) you can say it can be somewhat challenging if the snow becomes to deep. Thankfully I had two EL18’s at my disposal, with a total of 15.000hp and only four B3 carriages.

The Flåm Line goes from Flåm to Myrdal where it connects to the Bergen Line. Flåm is located 2m (6.5ft) above sea level and Myrdal is located 866m (2841ft) above sea level. The line itself is 20.2km (12.6miles) long.

  • Martin, I so enjoy your web site. As an American of Norwegian ancestors (Kjaerland, Kjellsvik, Hauge, Innbejoa to name a few) I especially appreciate the videos. We were fortunate to travel to Norway in 2015 and took the Norway in a Nutshell
trip. These videos let me relive the trip and see things I might have missed in real time. Judyth Neuzil

  • The trip is as beautiful in the snow as in sunlight and blue sky. I wonder if they stop for the witch dance at the waterfall.
