Using AI in Norwegian Genealogy Research

If you’ve spent any time hunting for ancestors in Digitalarkivet, you know the feeling: you finally find the record, you can just barely make out the priest’s handwriting, and then you hit a word you’ve never seen before. What AI Is Actually Good For

Drafting and tightening your own writing. Once you know the facts, AI can help you find the sentence, restructure a clunky paragraph, or suggest a better way to introduce a person in a family history narrative.

Building a search strategy from what you already know. This is a use I don’t think gets talked about enough. You don’t need AI to search records for you — you need it to help you think through where to look next. Lay out what you actually have (a name, an approximate birth year, a farm, a rumored emigration date) and ask it to help you reason through the logical next steps: which record types would exist for that period and place, what jurisdiction the farm likely fell under, what alternate spellings or patronymic forms the name might appear under, which nearby parishes to check if the home parish comes up empty, and what order to search in so you’re not wasting time. It’s less “find my ancestor” and more “here’s what I know — help me build a checklist of where this person could plausibly show up, and why.” That kind of structured reasoning is exactly what these models are built for, even though they can’t touch the archive itself.

A prompt template you can adapt:

I’m researching a Norwegian ancestor and want help building a search strategy — not an answer about who they were, just a plan for where to look next.

Name: [name, including any patronymic or farm name variants I’m aware of]

Swap in your own details, and treat the output as a checklist to work through — not a set of facts about your ancestor.

Which AI Apps Are Actually Worth Using

You don’t need anything exotic for this kind of work — the general-purpose chat assistants are more than capable, and most of them have a usable free tier. Here’s where things stand as of 2026:

Claude (Anthropic) — This is the one I reach for most, particularly for anything involving writing, careful explanation, or working through a nuanced historical question. Free tier is limited but usable for occasional lookups. Claude Pro runs $20/month and removes most of the usage limits; Claude Max ($100 or $200/month) is aimed at much heavier daily use than a genealogy hobbyist needs.

ChatGPT (OpenAI) — The most widely used option, with the broadest range of built-in extras (image generation, voice, web browsing). Free tier is fine for light use. ChatGPT Plus is $20/month; higher Pro tiers ($100–$200/month) are overkill unless you’re using it well beyond genealogy.

Gemini (Google) — Worth a look specifically if you already live inside Gmail, Docs, and Drive, since it’s built into all of them. Free tier exists; Google AI Pro is $19.99/month (often discounted for new subscribers), with a much pricier Ultra tier for power users.

For the kind of work described in this post — explaining terminology, sketching historical context, building a search strategy, tightening your writing — the free tier of any of these is often enough, and if you do decide to pay, the $20/month tier of whichever one you choose gets you the full flagship model with room to spare. I wouldn’t pay more than that for genealogy purposes alone. If you’re already paying for one of these for other reasons (work, other writing projects), there’s no need to add a second — the differences between them matter far less for this kind of use than the differences in your own research habits.

One practical note: whichever tool you use, check its data and privacy settings if you’re pasting in details about living relatives. Most offer a setting to opt out of having your conversations used for model training — worth turning on if you’re discussing family information you’d rather keep private.

What AI Is Not

I want to say this plainly, because it matters more than any tip above: AI is not your genealogist, and it is not a source.

Large language models will, with complete confidence, invent a farm name, a migration date, or a family relationship that sounds plausible and is entirely wrong. They don’t “look things up” the way a search engine does — they generate the statistically likely next word, which is a very different thing from knowing a fact. If you ask an AI to tell you about your specific ancestor, without feeding it your actual source material first, you are asking it to guess. And it will guess convincingly.

The rule I follow: AI helps me understand and explain the world my ancestors lived in. It never gets to tell me who they were. That still comes from Digitalarkivet, church books, censuses, bygdebøker, and probate records — full stop.

A Practical Workflow

Here’s roughly how I actually use this in practice:

  1. Lay out what you know and ask for a search strategy. Name variants, likely jurisdictions, neighboring parishes, record types that should exist for that place and period — use AI as a brainstorming partner for where to look next, before you start digging.
  2. Do the research. Find the record, transcribe it, verify it against other sources the way you always would.
  3. Ask AI to explain what you don’t understand. An unfamiliar term, an occupation, a legal process like a skifte (estate settlement) — ask for a plain-language explanation, and ask it to flag anything it’s uncertain about.
  4. Ask for historical context around your dates and places, not around your specific person. “What was rural life like in Romsdal in the 1880s” is a fair question. “Tell me about Ole Knutsen’s life” is not — AI doesn’t know Ole Knutsen; you do.
  5. Fact-check anything that will end up in print. Cross-reference against Store norske leksikon, Digitalarkivet, published bygdebøker, or academic sources before you repeat a claim in your own writing.
  6. Use it to help you write, not to write for you. Let it suggest phrasing or structure. Keep the facts, the interpretation, and the voice your own.

The Bottom Line

Norwegian genealogy has always required patience, an eye for old handwriting, and a working knowledge of a world that no longer exists. AI doesn’t replace any of that. What it does is hand you a faster way to build the background knowledge that used to take years of independent reading to accumulate — provided you keep it in its proper place: a research assistant with no access to primary sources, not a source itself.
