Books on Monday: “Norwegian history” and Haugen’s dictionary

Here are two books you might find interesting

History of Norway

by John A. Yilek (Author)

Based on exhaustive research, History of Norway is a clear, informative and entertaining description of Norway’s history from the earliest cultures of the Stone Age to today’s oil and gas economy. Along the way, there are fascinating stories of Vikings, the Sami, kings and queens, farmers and fishermen, merchants and miners, the Black Death, the Hanseatic merchants, the Reformation, independence, emigration from Norway to America, polar explorers, the Nazi invasion and the Norwegian resistance in World War II, and much more!

I haven’t read this historybook, but it gets good reviews on Amazon.  Haugen’s dictionary is a must for everyone dealing with Norwegian sources.
Norwegian-English Dictionary: A Pronouncing and Translating Dictionary of Modern Norwegian (Bokmål and Nynorsk) with a Historical and Grammatical Introduction

For more than forty years, the Haugen Norwegian–English Dictionary has been regarded as the foremost resource for both learners and professionals using English and Norwegian. With more than 60,000 entries, it is esteemed for its breadth, its copious grammatical detail, and its rich idiomatic examples. In his introduction, Einar Haugen, a revered scholar and teacher of Norwegian to English speakers, provides a concise overview of the history of the language, presents the pronunciation of contemporary Norwegian, and introduces basic grammatical structures, including the inflection of nouns and adjectives and the declension of verbs.

  • Thanks for this, Martin. I have an older edition of Haugen’s dictionary that I use all the time, and I intend to get a copy of the history.

    • Thanks for visiting my blog Gregory. As you probably can tell, English is not my native language. I use my English dictionary all the time.
