Travel is done, the main meals are over, and people are in the house with more time than usual and fewer places to be.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"469\">For a genealogist, that\u2019s useful.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"471\" data-end=\"791\">You may not be able to work through a complicated brick wall or spend hours in an archive, but you <em data-start=\"570\" data-end=\"575\">can<\/em> make progress on small, targeted tasks that will strengthen your research. Think of them as <strong data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"701\">year-end maintenance projects<\/strong> \u2013 practical \u201cgifts\u201d to your future self and to anyone who will later take over your work.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"793\" data-end=\"920\">Below are some concrete things you can do during romjul, using the people, photographs, and paper that are already in the house.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"922\" data-end=\"925\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"976\">1. Instead of telling yourself you\u2019ll \u201csort the photos one day\u201d, decide that this year you will deal with <strong data-start=\"1147\" data-end=\"1189\">the one that\u2019s on the table right now.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1191\" data-end=\"1206\"><strong data-start=\"1191\" data-end=\"1206\">What to do:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1208\" data-end=\"1508\">\n<li data-start=\"1208\" data-end=\"1260\">\n<p data-start=\"1210\" data-end=\"1260\">Work through it with whoever is willing to help.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1261\" data-end=\"1379\">\n<p data-start=\"1263\" data-end=\"1283\">For each photo, ask:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1286\" data-end=\"1379\">\n<li data-start=\"1286\" data-end=\"1328\">\n<p data-start=\"1288\" data-end=\"1328\">Who is in the picture (left to right)?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1331\" data-end=\"1354\">\n<p data-start=\"1333\" data-end=\"1354\">Where was it taken?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1357\" data-end=\"1379\">\n<p data-start=\"1359\" data-end=\"1379\">Roughly what year?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1380\" data-end=\"1508\">\n<p data-start=\"1382\" data-end=\"1405\">Write that information:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1408\" data-end=\"1508\">\n<li data-start=\"1408\" data-end=\"1455\">\n<p data-start=\"1410\" data-end=\"1455\">On the back in soft pencil (for prints), or<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1458\" data-end=\"1508\">\n<p data-start=\"1460\" data-end=\"1508\">In the file name \/ caption (for digital photos).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1510\" data-end=\"1574\">If you like, create a simple index on paper or in a spreadsheet:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1737\">\n<li data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1605\">\n<p data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"1605\">Photo number or file name<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1606\" data-end=\"1616\">\n<p data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"1616\">People<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1626\">\n<p data-start=\"1619\" data-end=\"1626\">Place<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1647\">\n<p data-start=\"1629\" data-end=\"1647\">Approximate year<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1648\" data-end=\"1737\">\n<p data-start=\"1650\" data-end=\"1737\">Short note (\u201cFirst Christmas in the new house\u201d, \u201cGrandfather just home from sea\u201d, etc.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1739\" data-end=\"1894\">You\u2019re not building a perfect system. You\u2019re making sure that <strong data-start=\"1801\" data-end=\"1893\">identifications and stories are captured while the people who know them are still around<\/strong>. Remember we are talking about small genealogy research projects.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1896\" data-end=\"1899\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1901\" data-end=\"1948\">2. Run a Short, Focused Christmas Interview<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1950\" data-end=\"2048\">Christmas gathers generations around the same table. That is rare in the rest of the year. Use it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2050\" data-end=\"2151\">You don\u2019t need a formal session with lights and microphones. A short, focused conversation is enough.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2153\" data-end=\"2176\"><strong data-start=\"2153\" data-end=\"2176\">Suggested approach:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2178\" data-end=\"2630\">\n<li data-start=\"2178\" data-end=\"2279\">\n<p data-start=\"2180\" data-end=\"2279\">Choose one person at a time: a grandparent, an older aunt or uncle, or a cousin with good memory.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2280\" data-end=\"2630\">\n<p data-start=\"2282\" data-end=\"2329\">Ask a few very specific questions, for example:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2332\" data-end=\"2630\">\n<li data-start=\"2332\" data-end=\"2387\">\n<p data-start=\"2334\" data-end=\"2387\">\u201cWhat is the first Christmas you remember clearly?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2390\" data-end=\"2447\">\n<p data-start=\"2392\" data-end=\"2447\">\u201cWho usually hosted Christmas when you were a child?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2450\" data-end=\"2550\">\n<p data-start=\"2452\" data-end=\"2550\">\u201cWas there a Christmas when something unusual happened \u2014 illness, bad weather, travel problems?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2553\" data-end=\"2630\">\n<p data-start=\"2555\" data-end=\"2630\">\u201cDid your family ever celebrate Christmas in a completely different place?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2632\" data-end=\"2796\">You can, of course, again see if Grandma Anna is ready to share her secret krumkake recipe.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2632\" data-end=\"2796\">If it feels natural, ask for permission to record the answers on your phone. Many people are fine with that if they understand you\u2019re doing this for family history. While this is not intended to be a formal interview, you might take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/martinroe.com\/blog\/sit-down-and-talk-to-older-living-relatives-about-the-family-history\/\">my article about interviews.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2798\" data-end=\"2818\">Afterwards, you can:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2820\" data-end=\"2977\">\n<li data-start=\"2820\" data-end=\"2878\">\n<p data-start=\"2822\" data-end=\"2878\">Note key dates, places and names in your research log.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2879\" data-end=\"2910\">\n<p data-start=\"2881\" data-end=\"2910\">Transcribe useful passages.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2911\" data-end=\"2977\">\n<p data-start=\"2913\" data-end=\"2977\">Attach the audio file or transcript to individuals in your tree.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2979\" data-end=\"3089\">Ten minutes of structured questions will often yield <strong data-start=\"3032\" data-end=\"3088\">more context than you\u2019ll ever find in formal records<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3091\" data-end=\"3094\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3096\" data-end=\"3130\">3. This is the sort of dull but crucial documentation that prevents years of work from disappearing.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3730\" data-end=\"3926\">As family visits for Christmas you might want to give one of them a memory stick with your backed up work, explain what it is and ask them to safekeep it and ask them to bring it back next Christmas. If one of the copies should, God forbid, be destroyed in some sort of dramatic event, there is another copy to start from.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3928\" data-end=\"3931\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3933\" data-end=\"3981\">4. Write One Christmas Snapshot per Ancestor<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3983\" data-end=\"4092\">Instead of \u201cwriting a family book\u201d (which easily becomes too big), try something smaller and more manageable:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4094\" data-end=\"4164\">\n<p data-start=\"4096\" data-end=\"4164\"><strong data-start=\"4096\" data-end=\"4164\">Write one short Christmas snapshot for a few selected ancestors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4166\" data-end=\"4322\">Pick a few people or couples you know reasonably well from your research. For each, write a brief paragraph describing <em data-start=\"4284\" data-end=\"4289\">one<\/em> likely Christmas in their lives.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4324\" data-end=\"4344\">Base it on evidence:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4346\" data-end=\"4598\">\n<li data-start=\"4346\" data-end=\"4399\">\n<p data-start=\"4348\" data-end=\"4399\">Census information (household size, occupations).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4400\" data-end=\"4458\">\n<p data-start=\"4402\" data-end=\"4458\">Bygdebok descriptions of the farm or local conditions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4459\" data-end=\"4523\">\n<p data-start=\"4461\" data-end=\"4523\">Known events (emigration, a death that year, a bad harvest).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4524\" data-end=\"4598\">\n<p data-start=\"4526\" data-end=\"4598\">Local histories describing Christmas customs in their region and period.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"4600\" data-end=\"4645\">Keep it clearly labelled as a reconstruction:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4647\" data-end=\"4738\">\n<p data-start=\"4649\" data-end=\"4738\">\u201cReconstructed scene based on 1900 census, parish records and local history for [place].\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4740\" data-end=\"4966\">Store these snapshots in one document or folder. Over several years, these can become a useful narrative supplement to your bare facts: <strong data-start=\"4876\" data-end=\"4966\">short, sourced \u201ccase studies\u201d of how specific families may have experienced Christmas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4968\" data-end=\"4971\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"4973\" data-end=\"5000\">5. Remnants of prior genealogy projects<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5163\" data-end=\"5224\">Year-end is a good time to stop that from turning into chaos and a very suitable small genealogy research projects.<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:10px\"><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"5226\" data-end=\"5255\"><strong data-start=\"5226\" data-end=\"5255\">Simple three-pile method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5257\" data-end=\"5295\">Prepare three labelled piles or boxes:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"5297\" data-end=\"5594\">\n<li data-start=\"5297\" data-end=\"5397\">\n<p data-start=\"5300\" data-end=\"5397\"><strong data-start=\"5300\" data-end=\"5311\">To file<\/strong> \u2013 material you want to keep and store properly (binders, folders, plastic sleeves).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5398\" data-end=\"5505\">\n<p data-start=\"5401\" data-end=\"5505\"><strong data-start=\"5401\" data-end=\"5415\">To process<\/strong> \u2013 notes and printouts that contain information still not entered into your tree or log.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5506\" data-end=\"5594\">\n<p data-start=\"5509\" data-end=\"5594\"><strong data-start=\"5509\" data-end=\"5523\">To discard<\/strong> \u2013 duplicates, unreadable printouts, and things you have finished with.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"5596\" data-end=\"5649\">Spend a set amount of time (30\u201360 minutes is enough):<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5651\" data-end=\"5925\">\n<li data-start=\"5651\" data-end=\"5707\">\n<p data-start=\"5653\" data-end=\"5707\">Put each piece of paper into one of the three piles.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5708\" data-end=\"5770\">\n<p data-start=\"5710\" data-end=\"5770\">File the \u201cto file\u201d material in the right binder or folder.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5771\" data-end=\"5849\">\n<p data-start=\"5773\" data-end=\"5849\">Make a small, realistic to-do list from the \u201cto process\u201d pile for January.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"5850\" data-end=\"5925\">\n<p data-start=\"5852\" data-end=\"5925\">Remove the \u201cto discard\u201d pile from your workspace without overthinking it.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"5927\" data-end=\"6019\">You don\u2019t need to finish everything. Even partial progress reduces friction for future work.
