A good research log is an old tradition.<!--more--> The spreadsheet I\u2019m sharing here is simply a way to keep these notes at hand and to bring that same careful, methodical habit into a digital format that\u2019s easy to search, filter, and carry with you.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"189\" data-end=\"260\">How to Use My Genealogy Research Planner in Google Sheets (or Excel)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"571\" data-end=\"713\">In this article, I\u2019ll walk through how to use my <strong data-start=\"620\" data-end=\"650\">Genealogy Research Planner<\/strong> in Google Sheets \u2013 and, if you prefer, in <strong data-start=\"693\" data-end=\"712\">Microsoft Excel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"717\" data-end=\"841\"><strong data-start=\"717\" data-end=\"743\">Download the template:<\/strong><br data-start=\"743\" data-end=\"746\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/martinroe.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Genealogy_Research_Planner.xlsx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em data-start=\"748\" data-end=\"841\">\u201cDownload the Genealogy Research Planner (Excel file)\u201d)<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"717\" data-end=\"841\">You may get a warning that this is an unsafe file. However, the file is hosted on the same server as this blog and is totally safe to download and use.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"957\">The file is an <strong data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"887\">Excel workbook (.xlsx)<\/strong> that works well both in <strong data-start=\"912\" data-end=\"929\">Google Sheets<\/strong> and in <strong data-start=\"937\" data-end=\"956\">Microsoft Excel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"957\">If you hover your mousepointer over any of the pictures in this article you can see an enlarged version of the picture.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"959\" data-end=\"962\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"964\" data-end=\"1008\">What this planner is \u2013 and what it is not<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1118\">This planner is <strong data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1033\">not<\/strong> another family tree program. It doesn\u2019t replace your main genealogy software\/online service.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1135\">Instead, it is:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1339\">\n<li data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1191\">\n<p data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1191\">A <strong data-start=\"1141\" data-end=\"1157\">research log<\/strong> for your questions and searches<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1236\">\n<p data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1236\">A <strong data-start=\"1196\" data-end=\"1212\">people index<\/strong> tied to your research<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1237\" data-end=\"1297\">\n<p data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1297\">A <strong data-start=\"1241\" data-end=\"1258\">sources index<\/strong> where you record what you\u2019ve checked<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1298\" data-end=\"1339\">\n<p data-start=\"1300\" data-end=\"1339\">A <strong data-start=\"1302\" data-end=\"1315\">task list<\/strong> for your ongoing work<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1341\" data-end=\"1479\">In other words: a traditional paper research notebook, but structured into tabs and columns so you can keep your work organized over time.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1481\" data-end=\"1484\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1486\" data-end=\"1538\">Step 1: Open the planner (Google Sheets or Excel)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1540\" data-end=\"1620\">The template is created as an Excel file so it can be used in both environments.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1622\" data-end=\"1659\">Option A: Use it in Google Sheets<\/h4>\n<ol data-start=\"1661\" data-end=\"2095\">\n<li data-start=\"1661\" data-end=\"1716\">\n<p data-start=\"1664\" data-end=\"1716\"><strong data-start=\"1664\" data-end=\"1685\">Download the file<\/strong> from my blog to your computer.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1717\" data-end=\"1767\">\n<p data-start=\"1720\" data-end=\"1767\">Go to <strong data-start=\"1726\" data-end=\"1754\"><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1728\" data-end=\"1752\">https:\/\/drive.google.com<\/a><\/strong> and sign the file.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1820\" data-end=\"1918\">\n<p data-start=\"1823\" data-end=\"1918\">In Google Drive, right-click the uploaded file and choose<br data-start=\"1880\" data-end=\"1883\" \/><strong data-start=\"1886\" data-end=\"1918\">\u201cOpen with \u2192 Google Sheets.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1919\" data-end=\"2095\">\n<p data-start=\"1922\" data-end=\"2095\">(Optional, but recommended): In Google Sheets, click<br data-start=\"1974\" data-end=\"1977\" \/><strong data-start=\"1980\" data-end=\"2012\">File \u2192 Save as Google Sheets<\/strong><br data-start=\"2012\" data-end=\"2015\" \/>This creates a native Sheets copy you can use and duplicate for new projects.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4 data-start=\"2097\" data-end=\"2136\">Option B: Use it in Microsoft Excel<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2138\" data-end=\"2197\">If you have <strong data-start=\"2150\" data-end=\"2169\">Microsoft Excel<\/strong> installed on your computer:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"2199\" data-end=\"2450\">\n<li data-start=\"2199\" data-end=\"2237\">\n<p data-start=\"2202\" data-end=\"2237\"><strong data-start=\"2202\" data-end=\"2223\">Download the file<\/strong> from my blog.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2238\" data-end=\"2319\">\n<p data-start=\"2241\" data-end=\"2319\">Locate it in your <strong data-start=\"2259\" data-end=\"2272\">Downloads<\/strong> folder (or wherever your browser saves files).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2320\" data-end=\"2369\">\n<p data-start=\"2323\" data-end=\"2369\">Double-click the file to open it in <strong data-start=\"2359\" data-end=\"2368\">Excel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2370\" data-end=\"2450\">\n<p data-start=\"2373\" data-end=\"2450\">If Excel shows a security warning (Protected View), click <strong data-start=\"2431\" data-end=\"2449\">Enable Editing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"2452\" data-end=\"2571\">All the sheets, column headings, basic formatting, and dropdown lists (Status and Priority) will work in Excel as well.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2635\" data-end=\"2667\">Working with several projects<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2669\" data-end=\"2735\">You don\u2019t have to use the same file for all your research forever.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2737\" data-end=\"2777\">In both Google Sheets and Excel you can:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2779\" data-end=\"3125\">\n<li data-start=\"2779\" data-end=\"2952\">\n<p data-start=\"2781\" data-end=\"2844\"><strong data-start=\"2781\" data-end=\"2800\">Rename the file<\/strong> to match a specific project, for example:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2847\" data-end=\"2952\">\n<li data-start=\"2847\" data-end=\"2895\">\n<p data-start=\"2849\" data-end=\"2895\"><code data-start=\"2849\" data-end=\"2893\">Genealogy Research Planner \u2013 data-end=\"3055\">In Google Sheets: <strong data-start=\"3030\" data-end=\"3053\">File \u2192 Make a copy\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3058\" data-end=\"3125\">\n<p data-start=\"3060\" data-end=\"3125\">In Excel: use <strong data-start=\"3074\" data-end=\"3086\">Save As\u2026<\/strong> and give the new file a different name<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3127\" data-end=\"3347\">This is especially useful if you work on several big projects at once.
