(Stranda, 1996 p.67)\u00a0 It\u2019s a compelling image. Yet when we test the story against primary evidence and careful secondary analysis, the trail runs cold. The \u201cknight\u201d does <strong data-start=\"777\" data-end=\"784\">not<\/strong> appear in contemporary sources, and the best critical review concludes he is a construction of later tradition. (Diplomatarium Norvegicum)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"920\" data-end=\"1400\">What the records <em data-start=\"937\" data-end=\"941\">do<\/em> show, however, is a solid Over\u00e5 lineage of farmers and landholders: <strong data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1036\">Olav Eriksson on Over\u00e5<\/strong> and his descendants appear clearly in a <strong data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1106\">1573 inheritance division<\/strong> between Langlo\u2013Opsvik\u2013Over\u00e5 branches, and in a <strong data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1170\">1604 dispute<\/strong> later entered into the <strong data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1225\">1711 Dale skipreide tingbok<\/strong>\u00a0 These documents anchor real people, real property, and real relationships\u2014just not a knight. (Arkivverket).<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1402\" data-end=\"1430\">What the Records Tell Us<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1431\" data-end=\"2138\">\n<li data-start=\"1431\" data-end=\"1627\">\n<p data-start=\"1433\" data-end=\"1627\">No contemporary listing of a knight from Over\u00e5 exists; the comprehensive review of candidates in the relevant period finds <strong data-start=\"1556\" data-end=\"1568\">no match<\/strong> for a \u201cRidder Erik\u201d tied to Over\u00e5. (Diplomatarium Norvegicum)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1628\" data-end=\"1814\">\n<p data-start=\"1630\" data-end=\"1814\">The <strong data-start=\"1634\" data-end=\"1663\">1573 inheritance document<\/strong> names <strong data-start=\"1670\" data-end=\"1696\">Olav Eriksson on Over\u00e5<\/strong> among the parties and enumerates property across Over\u00e5, Opsvik, Langlo and Geiranger farms (Soga.no).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1815\" data-end=\"2138\">\n<p data-start=\"1817\" data-end=\"2138\">A <strong data-start=\"1819\" data-end=\"1832\">1604 case<\/strong> about \u00e5sete and bygsel rights on Over\u00e5 identifies <strong data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1904\">Knut Olsson Over\u00e5<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1906\" data-end=\"1931\">Torstein Olsson Over\u00e5<\/strong>, and kin as heirs of <strong data-start=\"1953\" data-end=\"1976\">Olav Eriksson Over\u00e5<\/strong>\u2014evidence for a sturdy farming lineage, not nobility. Over time, a respected farmer becomes a warrior, then a noble, then a knight\u2014especially when later compilers stitch together thin threads across centuries. The critique that dismantles the Over\u00e5 knight shows how such stories can crystallize in print without documentary footing (Soga.no, 2002, n.p.).<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2533\" data-end=\"2553\">Why This Matters<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2554\" data-end=\"2863\">If we present lore as fact, we unintentionally erase the real lives behind the myth.
