You know that feeling when the rain is hammering the windows, the wind\u2019s howling like a pack of wolves that missed their dinner, and you think, \u201cPerfect day to stay in and relax\u201d?<\/em><\/p>\n

Soothing Saturday<\/em> \u2014 is my little corner for slowing down and stepping away from my usual genealogy deep dives. Think of it as a gentle exhale at the end of the week \u2014 a space for reflections, small joys, and simple stories written just for the pleasure of it.<\/p>\n<\/div>Yeah, that was me this morning. Mug of coffee in hand, slippers on, ready to spend a blissfully lazy Saturday channel-surfing between Egyptian archaeology documentaries I\u2019ll only half-watch and episodes of “Ice road rescue” I\u2019ve already seen twice.<\/p>\n

But then\u2026 I heard it.<\/p>\n

That fateful sentence from the other room \u2014 my wife\u2019s voice, sweet and innocent as a snowflake:<\/p>\n

\u201cOoh, I think there\u2019s a Christmas movie marathon on!\u201d<\/p>\n

And just like that, my weekend peace was gone.<\/em><\/p>\n

You see, the weather outside may be frightful, but the real storm brews when my wife gets the remote during \u201cChristmas movie season.\u201d And yes, apparently, \u201cseason\u201d now begins in October and lasts until, oh, about Easter.<\/p>\n

Before I could protest, the TV was taken hostage. And what appeared on screen? You guessed it \u2014 another<\/em> Hallmark-style Christmas movie.<\/p>\n

You know the ones.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s always a big-city woman named Holly, Noelle, or Joy \u2014 she\u2019s wearing heels completely unsuited for snow, heading back to her aggressively festive hometown. There\u2019s a rugged guy in flannel, probably named Nick, who runs a struggling Christmas tree farm or bakery. At first, they clash (\u201cYou don\u2019t understand small-town life!\u201d), but by the third mug of cocoa, they\u2019re saving Christmas and<\/em> each other from a vaguely defined corporate threat.<\/p>\n

And I sit there thinking aloud, Didn\u2019t we watch this exact one last week?<\/em>
To which my wife replies, \u201cNo, that was A Christmas Promise in Pineville.<\/em> This is A Pineville Christmas Promise.<\/em> Completely different.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course. Silly me.<\/p>\n

Do you remember that Christmas movie set in Bergen? That was… eh… something, wasn\u2019t it? I honestly thought I was having a stroke \u2014 I couldn\u2019t understand a word those so-called “Norwegians” were speaking in “Norwegian”.<\/em><\/p>\n

I turn to make another sarcastic comment \u2014 but she\u2019s already in another world.<\/p>\n

Oh, she’s counting loops on her knitting. -Is it called loops? Stitches maybe? Heck if I know. It’s amazing how she can knit a complex pattern while at the same time watch TV.<\/p>\n

I swear all these movies come from the same secret Christmas Movie Generator:<\/p>\n

Input: [Big City Career Woman], [Flannel Guy], [Snowstorm], [Cute Puppy gone missing]<\/em> \u2192 OUTPUT: \u201cA Christmas Miracle Under the Mistletoe.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Now, don\u2019t get me wrong \u2014 there\u2019s something oddly comforting about them. They\u2019re predictable in a world that isn\u2019t. No one dies, no one curses, and everything smells like cinnamon and hope.<\/p>\n

But as I sit here, banished from my documentaries, I can\u2019t help but wonder how long this will last.
Maybe I\u2019ll make peace with it. Maybe I\u2019ll even start enjoying them.<\/p>\n

The rhythmic clicking from Inge Lise’s knitting pins blends in with tubular bells and glockenspiel from the TV, while fake snow, Christmas lights and rosy-cheeked townspeople come together in a greater dimension.<\/p>\n

The truth is, Inger Lise and I are pretty much on the same page when it comes to the quality of these movies. She just wants a pleasant soundtrack while finishing off some knitting projects that will end up under someone’s Christmas tree. She wouldn’t have protested if I wanted to commandeer the remote, but I\u2019ll just sneak off with my tablet and watch men in dirty clothes dig mummies out of the sand or cars out of the snow. They are my people. We are all bit rough at the edges, and we all speak English with a terrible accent.<\/p>\n

Either way, it\u2019s a Soothing Saturday<\/strong> \u2014 the weather\u2019s awful, the coffee\u2019s warm, and love, archaeologists, and car rescuers always triumph by the time the director shouts “cut!”.<\/em><\/p>\n
