A brief look at the recording of sources.<\/p>\n

I’m a bit mad at myself right now, but actually, I shouldn’t be as I didn’t know better at the time I made my mistakes.<\/p>\n

About 25 years ago I started to record my own ancestry. Over the years I have recorded a large database of my ancestors and also of people who lived in my home municipality of Vestnes. In between helping others with their genealogy, I have tried to put in some time doing my own family search.<\/p>\n

The first years I was searching I used a lot of “Bygdeb\u00f8ker” (Farm and family history books)<\/a> and I didn’t always record the proper source for the information I found.\u00a0 Also, I see that in later years when I knew better I sometimes have forgotten to add the source. As I learned more about genealogy, I realized that this was not a very good idea.\u00a0 I am thinking of putting, at least parts of, my database online, so I am now going through it trying to add source citations were they are missing.<\/p>\n

Why do we need source citations?<\/h6>\n

It’s important to cite sources we used in our research for several reasons: To show our reader we have done proper research by listing sources we used to get our information.<\/p>\n

We all make mistakes, so if someone questions our findings, we need to know the source to be able to discuss the problem<\/p>\n

The purpose of the Genealogical Proof Standard<\/sup> is to show what the minimums are that a genealogist must do for his or her work to be credible (FamilySearch Research Wiki).<\/div>\n

There are five elements to the Genealogical Proof Standard:<\/p>\n

  1. Reasonably exhaustive research has been conducted.<\/li>\n
  2. Each statement of fact has a complete and accurate source citation.<\/li>\n
  3. The evidence is reliable and has been skillfully correlated and interpreted.<\/li>\n
  4. Any contradictory evidence has been resolved.<\/li>\n
  5. The conclusion has been soundly reasoned and coherently written.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
