The tax was set to one riksdaler for all persons over the age of 12, which meant a huge tax increase. In connection with this tax, all persons over the age of 12 were registered in a separate\u00a0register. Based on this I have to limit this article to the form that seems to have been most commonly used at least in the rural districts.<\/p>\n<p>This is the form we find in e.g.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalarkivet.no\/en\/source\/49640\">Extra Tax 1762-1764 for Inder\u00f8y bailiff<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the content page of each separate record, we need to look for &#8220;Manntall&#8221; or &#8220;Hovedmanntall&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>Here is an attempt to explain the headings. I number them from left:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ol>\n<li><b>The name of the farm and Matriculs number<\/b>\u00a0i.e the number the farm has in the land registry. If this is of particular interest, you might\u00a0want to read my article\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/martinroe.com\/blog\/norwegian-farm-structure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/martinroe.com\/blog\/index.php\/2016\/05\/01\/norwegian-farm-structure\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1549273482547000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFUzZ1S-Yawcekhx6FenXfrAdTCpA\">Norwegian farm structure\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The ownership of the farm\n<ol>\n<li><i><b>Proprietair\u00a0<\/b>means the farm was owned by a private person other than the ones that ran the farm, making these people tenant farms<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><b>Beneficeret\u00a0<\/b>means that the king i.e. the state owned\u00a0the farm. Here the people running the farm are also tenant farmers<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><b>Selv-eyer\u00a0<\/b>means that the people running the farm owns the land<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>The name of the couple(s) running the farm. As you will see from my article linked above, there might be several households on the same farm<\/li>\n<li>Children 12 years and older<\/li>\n<li>Servants<\/li>\n<li>Male farmhands 12 years and older<\/li>\n<li>Female farmhands 12 years and older<\/li>\n<li>Anyone else living at the farm<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/martinroe.com\/blog\/who-was-the-husmann\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cotters<\/a> and lodgers<\/li>\n<li>This column\u00a0seems to be the number of people living on the farm, however, the number doesn&#8217;t always match the number of names.<\/li>\n<li>Special remarks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You are probably going to find forms where this pattern doesn&#8217;t fit.
