{"id":6508,"date":"2018-04-29T11:14:08","date_gmt":"2018-04-29T10:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/martinroe.com\/blog\/?p=6508"},"modified":"2023-08-30T12:11:36","modified_gmt":"2023-08-30T10:11:36","slug":"52-ancestors-taxes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinroe.com\/blog\/52-ancestors-taxes\/","title":{"rendered":"#52 ancestors: Taxes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am a little behind in my writing and this theme in the &#8220;52 ancestors in 52 weeks challenge&#8221;\u00a0is from a couple of weeks ago.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The theme &#8220;Taxes&#8221; gives me the opportunity to look at a tax that was collected in 1816. It is called &#8220;S\u00f8lvskatten&#8221; \u2192 the silver tax, as it initially was supposed to be paid in silver.<\/p>\n<p>In 1814 Norway declared itself independent from Denmark. We got Our own constitution (Grunnlov), but ended in a union with Sweden. This was a personal union of the separate kingdoms of Sweden and Norway under a common monarch and common foreign policy that lasted from 1814 until its amicable and peaceful dissolution in 1905<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Union_between_Sweden_and_Norway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0(Wikipedia).<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At this time the national finances were in poor condition, partly because Norway, forced\u00a0by the union with Denmark, fought on the loosing side in the Napoleonic war. During this war the Norwegian merchant navy, one of the cornerstones in Norwegian economy, \u00a0were dealt a hard blow.<\/p>\n<p>To restore the confidence in the Norwegian economy, it was decided to establish a Norwegian\u00a0National Bank (Norges Bank).\u00a0No matter\u00a0outcome of the Napoleonic war, I think this bank would have been established anyway, as part of the process of forming Norway into an independent state.<\/p>\n<p>It was\u00a0first\u00a0attempted to\u00a0establish the bank by voluntary deposits. As this did not work out,\u00a0a compulsory tax was put in place. We can also look at the scanned images of the records. The Silvertax\u2192&#8221;S\u00f8lvskatten 1816&#8243; can not be considered a main source, but can be used to support other information that we got, e.g. to confirm a person&#8217;s presence at a farm. It normally don&#8217;t give the age of the persons listed, neither does it tell anything about the relationship between them. Only a few women are included.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As we can see, the administrative units of the records are based on the old names of the counties. It can therefore be smart to go to the &#8220;Geography&#8221; tab in the left column and choose the location we want to look at.<\/p>\n<p>The goal was to collect 2 million Speciedaler as primary capital for the National Bank. The government (Stortinget) decided the amount each county were to pay. It is not known for sure what these amounts were based on. It is believed that it to some extent were based on the taxvalue (matrikkelskyld) of the farms. In the different counties\/courtdistricts commissions decided how the tax should be paid.\u00a0The tax (deposits) were divided in different ways in the different counties. In some counties\/courtdistricts the tax was divided between all the households, while in other counties\/courtdistricts only the wealthiest were required to pay. This means that not all the households in Norway are registered in the taxrecords.<\/p>\n<p>Here are one of my ancestors who was registered in the tax:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hans Hanson S\u00f8r-Sylte\u00a0<\/strong>(born 1788) lived in Tresfjord, M\u00f8re og Romsdal. He was a cotter and trained tailor and had to pay 1 Speciesdaler.<\/p>\n<p>As a comparison Aslach Erichsen and Niels Erichsen who owned their parts of S\u00f8r-Sylte farm had to pay 10 Speciedaler each.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-note\"  style=\"border-color:#a9d0d7;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#c3eaf1;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;\">The\u00a0speciedaler\u00a0was the currency of\u00a0Norway from 1816. It replaced the rigsdaler, and was subdivided into 120\u00a0skilling\u00a0(called skilling\u00a0species\u00a0on some issues).
