Even though I have gotten better at reading Gothic handwriting, I seldom &#8220;call&#8221; the name until I have consulted <strong>Oluf Rygh&#8217;s &#8220;Norwegian Farm Names.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Before we go on, I should say that this technique is not entirely failproof. At the end of the article I will cover a few things that you should note.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To effectively do this we need to know what parish the record is from. That&#8217;s why I prefer to be presented a <strong>link to the actual record,<\/strong> and not a cut out picture of a limited section.<\/p>\n<p>For this article I picked at random a parish where I am not familiar with the farm names. I always check\u00a0 the introduction that tells me the old and new county names. I just can&#8217;t seem to remember them.<\/p>\n<p>The opening page also have a link to &#8220;More information about Norwegian Farm Names&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We have stated that we are dealing with the parish register from Rakkestad. That is; Rakkestad parish and the farms and their numbering as they were in 1886 when &#8220;Norwegian farm names&#8221; were published. If we compare the names in the record with the farm names in &#8220;Norwegian farm names&#8221; we see that<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Nordre Kaaen&#8221;<\/strong> must be what Rygh lists as <strong>Kaan nordre<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Mellebye&#8221; \u2192 Melleby (s\u00f8ndre)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Klepper&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>is hard to read, but helped by Rygh we recognise the name as\u00a0<strong>Klepper<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Fladberg&#8221; \u2192 Flatberg<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Si\u00f8lerud&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>must be\u00a0<strong>Skj\u00f8lerud<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If we, like in example no. 5 find a name that is spelled somewhat similar, but not quite,\u00a0we can check the box in front of the name, click the &#8220;Show&#8221; button. This brings up a list of different spellings of the farmname, found in various sources.<\/p>\n<p>That is all there is to it. To learn to recognise the Gothic letters, you might want to check out <a href=\"https:\/\/martinroe.com\/blog\/index.php\/2018\/01\/09\/the-gothic-syllabus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;The Gotich syllabus&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"su-box su-box-style-default\" id=\"\" style=\"border-color:#0074c6;border-radius:1px;max-width:none\"><div class=\"su-box-title\" style=\"background-color:#1da7f9;color:#FFFFFF;border-top-left-radius:0px;border-top-right-radius:0px\">But.......<\/div><div class=\"su-box-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"border-bottom-left-radius:0px;border-bottom-right-radius:0px\">&#8211; When these books were written a few of the parish names was spelled significantly different from today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 We may come across farm\/place names that is not listed on this website.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;Aa&#8221; is used instead of the modern &#8220;\u00e5&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; There are some parishes with the same name. We need to make sure we look at the right parish.<\/div><\/div>\n<p>I have had a lot of help from the &#8220;Norwegian farm names&#8221; website.
