This weeks photos are from the Nordvik farm in samnanger Hordaland<\/p>\n

The pictures are shared by my friend Chuck Schwartz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The people in the photo are (right to left):<\/em><\/p>\n

My great grandfather, Knut Tomassen Hisdal<\/strong> (1858-1939).\u00a0 He had for a number of years been a ship\u2019s carpenter (skipetst\u00f8mmermann) on the steam and sail ship \u201cAurora\u201d, sailing out of Bergen for ports in Europe, the UK, the Mediterranean and at least once to New York.<\/em><\/p>\n

Tomas Knutssen Nordvik<\/strong> (1887-1967).\u00a0 Knut\u2019s son and my grandma\u2019s brother.\u00a0 He later became a manager for Norsk Hydro.\u00a0 He and my grandma were very close through the years.<\/em><\/p>\n

Knut\u2019s second wife, Oline Johannessdtr<\/strong>. \u00a0His first wife, my great-grandmother Durdei Mikkelsdtr.<\/strong> died of complications from childbirth (barselsfeber)in 1898.\u00a0 Oline filled in as \u201chousekeeper\u201d (and, of course, managed the farm) while Knut was away at sea and they eventually married.<\/em><\/p>\n

Berta Andersdtr Reistad,<\/strong>\u00a0(1889-1969) was Tomas\u2019 wife.\u00a0 They married in 1911.\u00a0 My guess is that the photo was taken between that year and about 1915.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/em><\/p>\n

The farm in the photos is \u201cNordvik\u201d in the municipality of Samnanger in Hordaland vounty(S\u00f8ndre Bergenhus).\u00a0 It is still in the family, owned now by a cousin who has done an amazing job of maintaining and restoring it.\u00a0 It\u2019s like walking into a museum, but I think my Grandma Kristine would recognize it immediately and feel \u201chome\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

My grandmother, Kristine (1884-1972, not in this photo), came to the US in 1901 at the age of 17.\u00a0 She was accompanied on the voyage by a male first cousin.\u00a0 She was \u201csponsored\u201d by an uncle who had come to Minnesota several years before.<\/em><\/p>\n

Another brother, Johannes (1890-1966), is not in the photo.\u00a0 He also went to sea, like his father.\u00a0 His is a very interesting story, and I will tell it to you some day if you have time and interest.\u00a0 Simply said, it was the search for him that was the reason my Norwegian family and I connected again, totally by accident (fate?), after many years without contact.\u00a0 I owe him a lot, and hope one day to personally thank him.<\/em><\/p>\n

This photo was probably taken on the same day in about 1915 of the same four people as above.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

This is a photo portrait taken in about 1891; in it are my great grandma Durdei Mikkelsdtr<\/strong>, my grandma (standing, about 7 years old), Tomas (also standing and about 4 years old), and Johannes (on his mother\u2019s lap, about 1 year old).<\/em><\/p>\n
