The names of the Norwegian counties have changed over time and may cause confusion when we go through the sources.<\/p>\n

In Norway we use the word f<\/strong>ylke<\/strong> to describe the\u00a0county.\u00a0<\/strong>Fylke <\/strong>was\u00a0the name used on this administrative unit in\u00a0the 10th-13th centuries. The unit has been called\u00a0syssel<\/strong> and\u00a0len<\/strong> until 1662 when a royal decree changed the name of the unit to\u00a0amt<\/strong>. This was, of course, due to Danish influence. The name amt\u00a0<\/strong>was kept until 1918 when the name of the administrative unit was changed back to\u00a0fylke.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As we are going through sources we may find references to these amt<\/strong>\u00a0and their old names.\u00a0<\/strong>You may have read my article “Find Norwegian place names” (see link below)\u00a0<\/strong>and used the database based on Oluf Rygh’s books “Norwegian farm names”. \u00a0Rygh finished the manuscript for these books while the old names of the amt\u00a0<\/strong>was still in use, so these are the names you find in this database.<\/p>\n

There has, over the years been minor adjustments to the borders of these counties and some more changes are to come.\u00a0S\u00f8r-Tr\u00f8ndelag\u00a0<\/strong>and Nord Tr\u00f8ndelag\u00a0<\/strong>will be united into on county;\u00a0Tr\u00f8ndelag<\/strong> from 2018.\u00a0Vest Agder\u00a0<\/strong>and A<\/strong>u<\/strong>st Agder<\/strong> are likely to be united in 2020 and named Agder.<\/strong>\u00a0Also Finnmark <\/strong>and Troms<\/strong> are likely to merge. The name of the new county has not yet been decided.\u00a0<\/strong>There may also be other changes to the administrative structure coming up.<\/p>\n
