{"id":4973,"date":"2017-09-10T12:54:22","date_gmt":"2017-09-10T11:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/martinroe.com\/blog\/?p=4973"},"modified":"2017-09-10T17:02:38","modified_gmt":"2017-09-10T16:02:38","slug":"old-norwegian-amt-counties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/martinroe.com\/blog\/old-norwegian-amt-counties\/","title":{"rendered":"Old Norwegian amt (counties)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The names of the Norwegian counties have changed over time and may cause confusion when we go through the sources.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In Norway we use the word <strong>f<\/strong><strong>ylke<\/strong> to describe the\u00a0<strong>county.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Fylke <\/strong>was\u00a0the name used on this administrative unit in\u00a0<span id=\"Fylke_in_the_10th-13th_centuries\" class=\"mw-headline\">the 10th-13th centuries. The unit has been called\u00a0<strong>syssel<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>len<\/strong> until 1662 when a royal decree changed the name of the unit to\u00a0<strong>amt<\/strong>. This was, of course, due to Danish influence. The name <strong>amt\u00a0<\/strong>was kept until 1918 when the name of the administrative unit was changed back to\u00a0<strong>fylke.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As we are going through sources we may find references to these <strong>amt<\/strong>\u00a0and their old names.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>You may have read my article &#8220;Find Norwegian place names&#8221; (see link below)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and used the database based on Oluf Rygh&#8217;s books &#8220;Norwegian farm names&#8221;. \u00a0Rygh finished the manuscript for these books while the old names of the <strong>amt\u00a0<\/strong>was still in use, so these are the names you find in this database.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a list showing the old\u00a0<strong>amt<\/strong>\u00a0names\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and the corresponding modern\u00a0<strong>fylke.<\/strong><\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 980px;\" some more changes are to come.\u00a0<strong>S\u00f8r-Tr\u00f8ndelag\u00a0<\/strong>and N<strong>ord Tr\u00f8ndelag\u00a0<\/strong>will be united into on county;\u00a0<strong>Tr\u00f8ndelag<\/strong> from 2018.\u00a0<strong>Vest Agder\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong>A<\/strong><strong>u<\/strong><strong>st Agder<\/strong> are likely to be united in 2020 and named <strong>Agder.<\/strong>\u00a0Also <strong>Finnmark <\/strong>and <strong>Troms<\/strong> are likely to merge.
