We live in a hurry.<\/p>\n

Not necessarily because we are busy. Sometimes we are simply accustomed to moving quickly.<\/p>\n

Soothing Saturday \u2014 is my little corner for slowing down and stepping away from my usual genealogy deep dives. Think of it as a gentle exhale at the end of the week \u2014 a space for reflections, small joys, and simple stories written just for the pleasure of it.<\/p>\n<\/div>We eat quickly. We answer messages quickly. We scroll quickly. We listen to music while doing something else. We watch television with a phone in our hand.<\/p>\n

Even relaxing can become something we rush through.<\/p>\n

We have become remarkably efficient at doing nothing.<\/p>\n

Perhaps, just for today, we could try something different.<\/p>\n

Do one ordinary thing slowly.<\/p>\n

Make a cup of coffee and don’t drink it while checking your phone. Sit down with it. Let it cool a little. Look out the window.<\/p>\n

Put on a piece of music and listen to the whole thing.<\/p>\n

Not while reading the news.<\/p>\n

Not while answering email.<\/p>\n

Just listen.<\/p>\n

There is something wonderfully old-fashioned about giving one thing your complete attention.<\/p>\n

Take a walk without measuring it.<\/p>\n

You don’t need to know how many steps you have taken. You don’t need to improve your fitness. You don’t need to photograph anything.<\/p>\n

Walk until you feel like turning around.<\/p>\n

Notice the weather.<\/p>\n

Notice the light.<\/p>\n

Notice the ridiculous determination of a small bird looking for food.<\/p>\n

Let the world be interesting without requiring you to record it.<\/p>\n

Perhaps read a few pages of a book.<\/p>\n

Not twenty chapters.<\/p>\n

Not because you have set yourself a target.<\/p>\n

Just a few pages.<\/p>\n

And when you reach the end of a page, don’t immediately turn it.<\/p>\n

Stay there for a moment.<\/p>\n

There is no prize for finishing first.<\/p>\n

Right. Sales pitch over. Back to the coffee.\u201d<\/div><\/div>\n

We spend an extraordinary amount of our lives trying to get somewhere else.<\/p>\n

To the weekend.<\/p>\n

To the holiday.<\/p>\n

To retirement.<\/p>\n

To the next episode.<\/p>\n

To the next notification.<\/p>\n

To the next achievement.<\/p>\n

And meanwhile, this particular Saturday is quietly disappearing.<\/p>\n

We won’t get it back.<\/p>\n

So perhaps the nicest thing you can do with it is not to optimise it.<\/p>\n

Don’t make a project out of your relaxation.<\/p>\n

Don’t turn your walk into a workout.<\/p>\n

Don’t turn your coffee into a productivity ritual.<\/p>\n

Don’t turn your reading into a challenge.<\/p>\n

Just be there.<\/p>\n

For a little while.<\/p>\n

The world will still be waiting when you get back.<\/p>\n

And if it isn’t\u2014<\/p>\n

well, there was never much you could have done about that anyway.<\/p>\n
