First as Crown Prince and, since 1991, as King, his face has been part of the Norwegian landscape for as long as many of us can remember. We have seen him at national celebrations and in times of sorrow, on the Palace balcony on 17 May, on television at Christmas and during visits to communities all over the country.<\/p>\n His presence became so familiar that we hardly thought about it.<\/p>\n Until today.<\/p>\n King Harald died peacefully at Rikshospitalet at 6:35 this morning, 28 August 2026, at the age of 89. After more than thirty-five years on the throne, his reign has come to an end.<\/p>\n For me, the memory goes back even further, to 1984, when Harald was still Crown Prince. I was serving in the military band at the boot camp at KNM Harald H\u00e5rfagre in Stavanger when he visited. The band played the Royal Fanfare, with the Crown Prince standing only about two meters in front of me.<\/p>\n At the time, it was simply part of a military band’s duties. Looking back now, more than forty years later, that moment has acquired a very different significance. I was there when the man who would become King Harald V was still Crown Prince Harald.<\/p>\n There was something about Harald that made it unusually easy for people to feel comfortable around him. He understood the formal side of being a monarch, but he never seemed imprisoned by it. Somehow, he could be the King without constantly reminding everyone that he was the King.<\/p>\n I remember another story from M\u00f8re og Romsdal after the hurricane in 1992. Local dignitaries had gathered to welcome him, dressed appropriately for an official royal visit. They were wearing their dark suits and, rather unfortunately, light shoes.<\/p>\n Then Harald arrived.<\/p>\n He was dressed for the place and the weather: a sensible windbreaker, a good cap and rubber boots.<\/p>\n It is a small story, but I think it tells us something important about him. The people waiting for him had dressed for the King. The King had dressed for M\u00f8re og Romsdal.<\/p>\n There was humor in the contrast, but there was also a certain practicality about it that felt very Norwegian. Harald did not need to put on an elaborate appearance to demonstrate his position. He knew who he was.<\/p>\n That quality helped him meet people on their own terms.<\/p>\n Queen Sonja has always had much the same ability. Together, they could walk into a room filled with protocol and ceremony and somehow make the atmosphere less stiff. They seemed genuinely interested in the people they met, and that interest made others relax.<\/p>\n It is an understated quality, but an important one. A person who makes you feel comfortable has already crossed much of the distance between you.<\/p>\n Harald also had a very good sense of humor, including the ability to laugh at himself.<\/p>\n He could be serious when the occasion demanded it, but he never seemed to think that being King meant having to behave as though he were made of marble. His humor could be dry and understated, and sometimes it was simply there in an expression or a reaction.<\/p>\n That suited him.<\/p>\n Norwegians are not particularly comfortable with excessive grandeur. We tend to trust people who can laugh at themselves, who do not make too much fuss and who can acknowledge the absurdity of a situation when appropriate.<\/p>\n Harald understood that instinctively.<\/p>\n He was a King, but he was also recognizably Norwegian.<\/p>\n There was another quality in Harald that became particularly important whenever Norway experienced tragedy.<\/p>\n He was not afraid to show his tears.<\/p>\n A monarch can easily become a symbol rather than a person. There is a certain expectation that the King should remain composed, strong and dignified whatever happens around him. Harald certainly understood dignity, but he did not believe that dignity required him to hide his emotions.<\/p>\n When the country was hurting, people could see that he was hurting too.<\/p>\n That made a difference.<\/p>\n He never seemed to be telling Norwegians how they ought to feel. Instead, he stood among them and shared the moment. His tears were not a performance; they were an expression of genuine sorrow.<\/p>\n Perhaps that was one reason people trusted him so much.<\/p>\n He could represent the nation without placing himself above it.<\/p>\n If there is one speech that perhaps captures Harald’s understanding of Norway better than any other, it is the speech he gave at the Royal Couple’s garden party on 1 September 2016.<\/p>\n The occasion marked 25 years of Harald and Sonja as King and Queen, and 1,500 people from across Norway had been invited to the Palace gardens. Looking out at such a varied gathering, Harald considered what Norway actually was.<\/p>\n He could have spoken about the mountains, the fjords, the coastline or the long history of the country. Instead, he brought the answer back to the people who live here.<\/p>\n \u201cNorge er fremfor alt mennesker.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Norway is, above all, people.<\/p>\n He went on to describe a Norway made up of people from the north and south and from all parts of the country, people whose families had come from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Poland, Sweden, Somalia, Syria and many other places. He spoke of young and old, rich and poor, people of different faiths and people with no faith, people with different abilities and occupations, and sexual orientation.<\/p>\n And, characteristically, he even found room for those who love football and those who would rather sit on the sofa.<\/p>\n There was humor in the speech, but there was also a serious point behind it. Harald was not trying to define who belonged to Norway by drawing a narrow line around Norwegian identity. He was widening the circle.<\/p>\n His hope was that we would build the country on trust, community and generosity, and that despite all our differences, we would still recognize that we belong to one another.<\/p>\n That is a powerful message for a monarch.<\/p>\n Harald understood that his role was not to make Norwegians agree on everything. Politics would take care of the disagreements. His role was to remind us that beneath those disagreements was something larger: a shared country and a shared sense of belonging.<\/p>\n That was one of the ways he united Norway.<\/p>\n Over the years, Harald became more than a constitutional figure. For many Norwegians, he became part of the national family.<\/p>\n He was, in a sense, the father of the nation, and as the years passed, the grandfather as well.<\/p>\n It sounds sentimental when put so directly, but there was something real behind it. We watched him grow older. We watched his children grow up and his grandchildren appear beside him. Several generations of Norwegians grew up with the same familiar face as their King.<\/p>\n Politicians come and go, sometimes remarkably quickly. Harald remained.<\/p>\n He was there through our childhood, our adulthood and, for some, much of our old age. He was there when we celebrated, when we worried and when we mourned. He was also there during the ordinary years when nothing particularly historic seemed to be happening.<\/p>\n That constancy became part of who he was.<\/p>\n He did not have to tell people that he belonged to the country. His long presence had already made him part of it.<\/p>\n Harald was born in 1937, and his life spanned one of the most remarkable periods of change in Norwegian history.<\/p>\n He was a small child when Germany invaded Norway in 1940 and spent part of the war outside the country with his mother and sisters. He returned to a Norway that was rebuilding itself after the occupation and became Crown Prince in 1957.<\/p>\n By the time he became King in 1991, Norway had already changed enormously. During his reign, the transformation continued.<\/p>\n The development of the petroleum industry changed the country’s economy. Television became commonplace, followed by computers, the internet and smartphones. Society changed in ways that would have been difficult to imagine when Harald was a child.<\/p>\n Through all of this, he remained a familiar presence.<\/p>\n That is one of the quieter functions of a constitutional monarchy. A monarch does not have to govern the country to become part of its identity. Sometimes continuity itself has value.<\/p>\n Harald represented that continuity without seeming to demand that Norway remain unchanged.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n It is impossible to speak about Harald without speaking about Queen Sonja.<\/p>\n For more than half a century, they have been one of the most recognizable couples in Norway. Their marriage and family life have naturally been part of the public story, but what has always struck me is the warmth with which they have met people.<\/p>\n Both have a gift for making others feel at ease.<\/p>\n They could be surrounded by ceremony without allowing the ceremony to become the most important thing in the room. Whether they were visiting a small community or attending a formal reception, they often seemed more interested in the people around them than in the formality of the occasion.<\/p>\n Perhaps that is why they became so familiar to us.<\/p>\n They never had to pretend that royal life was ordinary. Instead, they brought something of ordinary Norwegian warmth into royal life.<\/p>\n When King Olav V died in January 1991, Harald immediately became King Harald V. There was no period in which Norway was without a monarch.<\/p>\n Today, the same principle applies.<\/p>\n With Harald’s death, Crown Prince Haakon immediately became King Haakon VIII<\/strong>.<\/p>\n At the same time, Princess Ingrid Alexandra became Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n There is something remarkable about seeing the generations move forward so clearly. Harald belonged to the generation that experienced the war and the rebuilding of Norway. Haakon belongs to the generation that grew up in the modern Norwegian welfare state, while Ingrid Alexandra represents a generation that has grown up in a world of smartphones, social media and a very different relationship with the rest of the world.<\/p>\n Three generations of the same family now stand at the center of the Norwegian monarchy.<\/p>\n King Haakon VIII begins his reign with the enormous responsibility of following his father. Ingrid Alexandra has moved one step closer to a role that, one day, will be hers.<\/p>\n But today belongs to Harald.<\/p>\n One of the strange things about history is that it rarely feels like history while we are living it.<\/p>\n When Harald became King in 1991, nobody knew that his reign would last more than thirty-five years. When he visited Stavanger in 1984, nobody knew that the young Crown Prince would eventually become one of the defining figures of modern Norway.<\/p>\n We were simply living our lives.<\/p>\n That is something I often think about as a genealogist. The things that seem ordinary today may become the things that people research tomorrow.<\/p>\n A photograph, a newspaper clipping, a story told by a parent or grandparent, a memory of seeing someone important at close quarters \u2014 these are the small pieces that eventually give history its human dimension.<\/p>\n For me, Harald is therefore not simply a man born in 1937, who became King in 1991 and died in 2026. He is also the Crown Prince I remember seeing in Stavanger in 1984 while the military band played the Royal Fanfare.<\/p>\n It is only a small memory, but it connects my own life to a moment that has now become part of the past.<\/p>\n Years from now, Harald will be described in history books as King Harald V, son of King Olav V, husband of Queen Sonja, father of King Haakon VIII and grandfather of Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra.<\/p>\n His reign will be measured in years. His speeches will be preserved. His photographs will remain in archives and family albums.<\/p>\n But I suspect that what many Norwegians will remember most will be less formal.<\/p>\n They will remember his humor and his warmth, his ability to put people at ease and his willingness to show emotion when the country was hurting. They will remember a King who could stand among ordinary people without making them feel small, and who understood that his role was not to place himself above the nation but to stand with it.<\/p>\n They will remember the man who arrived in M\u00f8re og Romsdal after a hurricane wearing a windbreaker, a good cap and rubber boots while the dignitaries waiting for him stood there in dark suits and light shoes. It is difficult to imagine a better illustration of Harald’s particular brand of understated humor.<\/p>\n They will remember his words from 2016, when he reminded us that Norway is, above all, people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n And many will remember a King who gradually became something more than a monarch.<\/p>\n He became part of the family.<\/p>\n The father of the nation.<\/p>\n And, with the passing of the years, the grandfather.<\/p>\n That is perhaps why his death feels so strangely personal.<\/p>\n For more than three decades, Harald was our King. For many of us, he had been part of Norwegian life for much longer than that.<\/p>\n We watched him become King. We watched him grow older. We watched his family grow around him, and we watched the country itself change while he remained a familiar presence through it all.<\/p>\n Today, the Crown has passed to a new generation.<\/p>\n King Haakon VIII has begun his reign, and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra has taken her place as the future of the Norwegian monarchy. In time, they will create their own memories and their own history.<\/p>\n But Harald leaves behind a place that cannot simply be filled because another man has put on the Crown.<\/p>\n For a while, I suspect, many of us will still look for him.<\/p>\n We will expect to see him on the Palace balcony on 17 May. We will hear his name and have to remind ourselves that he is no longer there. We will see photographs from his long life and realize just how much of our own lives are contained within them.<\/p>\n That is the peculiar thing about a King who has been there for so long.<\/p>\n He becomes part of the scenery of your life, and only when he is gone do you realize that he was never scenery at all.<\/p>\n He was part of the story.<\/p>\n Alt for Norge.<\/strong><\/p>\n Rest in peace, King Harald.<\/p>\nA King who understood people<\/h2>\n
