To do this, it&#8217;s important to have some knowledge of the Norwegian property numbering system.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1brri8a\" data-start=\"45\" data-end=\"112\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_practical_primer_before_we_search_Eiendom_in_Digitalarkivet\"><\/span>A practical primer before we search <em data-start=\"85\" data-end=\"94\">Eiendom<\/em> in Digitalarkivet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"246\" data-end=\"702\">Farm names alone are not enough. Names repeat across the country, spelling changes over time, and boundaries shift with subdivisions and municipal reforms. What stays legally precise is the property\u2019s <strong data-start=\"447\" data-end=\"461\">identifier<\/strong> in the official registers. In Norway, that means the numbering systems tied to the <strong data-start=\"545\" data-end=\"558\">Matrikkel<\/strong> (the official property register) and the <strong data-start=\"600\" data-end=\"612\">Grunnbok<\/strong> (the register of tinglyste rights and encumbrances). (Kartverket, 2026; Kartverket, 2025)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"704\" data-end=\"1075\">Over time, Norway moved from older matrikkel-based identifiers toward the modern <strong data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"810\">g\u00e5rds- og bruksnummer<\/strong> structure. If we trace a property across generations, we will almost certainly cross from one system into another. Without that foundation, property research becomes confusing. With it, <em data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1006\">Eiendom<\/em> searches become structured and predictable. (Kartverket, 2026)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1csmv0f\" data-start=\"1362\" data-end=\"1661\">\n<p data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1661\"><strong data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1378\">Grunnboken<\/strong> is the public register that shows <strong data-start=\"1413\" data-end=\"1426\">tinglyste<\/strong> rights and obligations connected to a property (ownership transfers, mortgages, easements, and more). Historically, it was literally a \u201cbook\u201d with a sheet for each property; today it is managed as a digital register. (Kartverket, 2025)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"1900\">For genealogists, the takeaway is simple: the property\u2019s identifier is the key that links the physical property (Matrikkel) to the legal paper trail (Grunnbok and the underlying tinglysing documents). That&#8217;s when the Norwegian property numbering system starts to make sense. It is unique <em data-start=\"2097\" data-end=\"2123\">within that municipality<\/em>. (Kartverket, 2021)<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"isow6\" data-start=\"2145\" data-end=\"2177\">What is a bruksnummer (bnr)?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2178\" data-end=\"2398\">A <strong data-start=\"2180\" data-end=\"2195\">bruksnummer<\/strong> identifies subdivisions (separate registered units) under that farm number\u2014created over time through subdivision, sale, inheritance divisions, and later surveying\/registration events. (Kartverket, 2021)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2400\" data-end=\"2427\"><strong data-start=\"2400\" data-end=\"2427\">Example (illustrative):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2428\" data-end=\"2555\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1w1p7r0\" data-start=\"2428\" data-end=\"2484\">\n<p data-start=\"2430\" data-end=\"2484\"><strong data-start=\"2430\" data-end=\"2440\">Gnr 45<\/strong> = one main farm unit in that municipality<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"lbqh1c\" data-start=\"2485\" data-end=\"2555\">\n<p data-start=\"2487\" data-end=\"2555\"><strong data-start=\"2487\" data-end=\"2504\">Gnr 45, Bnr 3<\/strong> = the third registered unit under that farm number<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2557\" data-end=\"2685\">This <strong data-start=\"2562\" data-end=\"2573\">gnr\/bnr<\/strong> structure is what most modern property tools and <em data-start=\"2623\" data-end=\"2632\">Eiendom<\/em> workflows are built around. (Digitalarkivet, n.d.-b)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2687\" data-end=\"2723\">A traditional way to think about it:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2724\" data-end=\"2844\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1ikw6tx\" data-start=\"2724\" data-end=\"2777\">\n<p data-start=\"2726\" data-end=\"2777\">The <strong data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"2743\">farm name<\/strong> is the everyday, historical name.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"11v31qr\" data-start=\"2778\" data-end=\"2844\">\n<p data-start=\"2780\" data-end=\"2844\"><strong data-start=\"2780\" data-end=\"2791\">Gnr\/bnr<\/strong> is the property\u2019s <em data-start=\"2810\" data-end=\"2826\">legal identity<\/em> in the registers.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2846\" data-end=\"2954\">Farm names can repeat. <strong data-start=\"2869\" data-end=\"2935\">Gnr\/bnr is designed to be unambiguous within the municipality.<\/strong> (Kartverket, 2026)<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2956\" data-end=\"2959\" \/>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"ez3cwj\" data-start=\"2961\" data-end=\"3015\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Older_identifiers_youll_meet_in_historical_sources\"><\/span>Older identifiers you\u2019ll meet in historical sources<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"11aytk0\" data-start=\"3017\" data-end=\"3036\">Matrikkelnummer<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3037\" data-end=\"3331\">A <strong data-start=\"3039\" data-end=\"3058\">matrikkelnummer<\/strong> is an older property identifier used in earlier land register systems and commonly encountered in 1800s-era property contexts. It identifies a farm within a municipality under older numbering traditions, but it does not follow the modern gnr\/bnr format. In practice, the <strong data-start=\"3860\" data-end=\"3878\">1886 matrikkel<\/strong> (and local derivative lists) is often where we build the \u201cbridge\u201d between older references and modern gnr\/bnr. (Kartverket, n.d.)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5856\" data-end=\"5875\">This is ideal when:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5876\" data-end=\"6024\">\n<li data-section-id=\"j4soh9\" data-start=\"5876\" data-end=\"5959\">\n<p data-start=\"5878\" data-end=\"5959\">we have an address from family papers, photos, later records, or a known location<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"po7x1c\" data-start=\"5960\" data-end=\"6024\">\n<p data-start=\"5962\" data-end=\"6024\">we want to anchor a historic farm to a modern identifier first<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"8eorit\" data-start=\"6026\" data-end=\"6072\">2) Use Norgeskart (map-first confirmation)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6073\" data-end=\"6344\">Kartverket\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/norgeskart.no\/#!?project=norgeskart&amp;layers=1001&amp;zoom=3&amp;lat=7197864.00&amp;lon=396722.00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"6086\" data-end=\"6100\">Norgeskart<\/strong> <\/a>is a practical \u201cfind it on the map\u201d tool. It is widely used for locating places and viewing related datasets, and it is often a good way to confirm that we\u2019re looking at the right place when names repeat. (Kartverket, n.d.-b; Norgeskart, n.d.)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6346\" data-end=\"6365\">This is ideal when:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"6366\" data-end=\"6488\">\n<li data-section-id=\"ehpdm0\" data-start=\"6366\" data-end=\"6415\">\n<p data-start=\"6368\" data-end=\"6415\">the address is uncertain, but the area is known<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1fy55xa\" data-start=\"6416\" data-end=\"6488\">\n<p data-start=\"6418\" data-end=\"6488\">multiple farms share similar names and geography is our best safeguard<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"17i2xig\" data-start=\"6490\" data-end=\"6553\">3) For farms and agricultural property: use NIBIO G\u00e5rdskart<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6554\" data-end=\"6791\">If we\u2019re researching a traditional farm property, <a href=\"https:\/\/gardskart.nibio.no\/search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"6604\" data-end=\"6625\">NIBIO\u2019s G\u00e5rdskart<\/strong> i<\/a>s extremely useful. It is designed for agricultural properties and explicitly draws gnr\/bnr from land-related registers while tying it to map context. (NIBIO, n.d.)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6793\" data-end=\"6812\">This is ideal when:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"6813\" data-end=\"6931\">\n<li data-section-id=\"vzdy5a\" data-start=\"6813\" data-end=\"6870\">\n<p data-start=\"6815\" data-end=\"6870\">the target is a landbrukseiendom or farm-based property<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1bnreaa\" data-start=\"6871\" data-end=\"6931\">\n<p data-start=\"6873\" data-end=\"6931\">we want both identifiers and land-use context in one place<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1y4m0jm\" data-start=\"6933\" data-end=\"7016\">4) Read gnr\/bnr directly from a grunnbok context (if we already have paperwork)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"7017\" data-end=\"7249\">If we already have a grunnboksutskrift, mortgage document, or a later property extract, the property identification is typically stated clearly, and we can use that identifier to drive the Digitalarkivet workflow. (Kartverket, 2025)<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"scvgmn\" data-start=\"7251\" data-end=\"7333\">5) Use Digitalarkivet\u2019s <em data-start=\"7279\" data-end=\"7296\">Gammel grunnbok<\/em> self-service (once you have gnr\/bnr)<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"7334\" data-end=\"7579\">Once gnr\/bnr is known, Digitalarkivet\u2019s <strong data-start=\"7374\" data-end=\"7407\">Selvbetjening gammel grunnbok<\/strong> lets us order\/download the grunnboksblad as a PDF\u2014often the quickest way to get structured references to older tinglysing. (Digitalarkivet, n.d.-c; Digitalarkivet, n.d.-b)<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1pp70d4\" data-start=\"7581\" data-end=\"7680\">6) If we only have older identifiers (matrikkelnummer\/l\u00f8penummer): bridge forward, then confirm<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"7681\" data-end=\"7812\">When we start with 1800s sources, we often have older numbering and variable names. In that case, the safe method is triangulation:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"7814\" data-end=\"8031\">\n<li data-section-id=\"32c6ly\" data-start=\"7814\" data-end=\"7878\">\n<p data-start=\"7816\" data-end=\"7878\">identify the farm by name + context (parish, neighbors, users)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"qx9toe\" data-start=\"7879\" data-end=\"7959\">\n<p data-start=\"7881\" data-end=\"7959\">bridge forward using standardized matrikkel material and local reference lists<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"pna642\" data-start=\"7960\" data-end=\"8031\">\n<p data-start=\"7962\" data-end=\"8031\">confirm by matching geography and register headings before we proceed<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"8033\" data-end=\"8283\">A good rule of thumb: don\u2019t move into <em data-start=\"8071\" data-end=\"8080\">Eiendom<\/em> searching until we can connect the old reference to modern gnr\/bnr with <strong data-start=\"8153\" data-end=\"8195\">at least two independent confirmations<\/strong> (for example: map match + register heading match).
