I\u2019ve done the classic move of starting by looking for a baptism, clicking three \u201chelpful\u201d links, and somehow ending up deep in <strong data-start=\"744\" data-end=\"756\">Property,<\/strong> wondering how my life got here.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"790\" data-end=\"1214\">The trick is simple: <strong data-start=\"811\" data-end=\"848\">Digitalarkivet is not one search.<\/strong> It\u2019s several tools, each meant for a different job. On the English front page you\u2019ll see the main \u201cdoors\u201d clearly: <strong data-start=\"964\" data-end=\"990\">Search for individuals<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1044\">Scanned material (Search for digitised archives)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1061\">Find source<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1063\" data-end=\"1075\">Property<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1089\">Censuses<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1091\" data-end=\"1110\">Parish registry<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1112\" data-end=\"1131\">Law and justice<\/strong>, plus <strong data-start=\"1138\" data-end=\"1153\">Search help<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1158\" data-end=\"1175\">More It\u2019s great for quickly finding <em data-start=\"2309\" data-end=\"2319\">possible<\/em> matches. Just remember the old-fashioned rule: <strong data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2407\">a search result is a clue, not proof<\/strong>. When there\u2019s a \u201cSee scanned version\u201d option, that\u2019s usually where you want to end up.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2534\" data-end=\"2634\">(And if your ancestor is named Ole Olsen, you have my sympathy. You\u2019re going to get\u2026 a few hits.)<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2636\" data-end=\"2639\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2641\" data-end=\"2702\">2) Do I not know which record exists (or where it lives)?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2703\" data-end=\"2725\">Go to <strong data-start=\"2709\" data-end=\"2724\">Find source<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2727\" data-end=\"3048\">Think of it as the modern archive desk: <em data-start=\"2767\" data-end=\"2817\">\u201cShow me what exists for this place and period.\u201d<\/em> The Find source page lets you filter by <strong data-start=\"2858\" data-end=\"2868\">Period<\/strong> and by <strong data-start=\"2876\" data-end=\"2884\">Form<\/strong> (for example: <strong data-start=\"2899\" data-end=\"2910\">Scanned<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2912\" data-end=\"2926\">Searchable<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2928\" data-end=\"2941\">Full text<\/strong>), which is incredibly useful when you\u2019re trying to avoid guessing.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3050\" data-end=\"3053\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3055\" data-end=\"3099\">3) Do I need to read the original pages?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3100\" data-end=\"3157\">Use <strong data-start=\"3104\" data-end=\"3156\">Scanned material (Search for digitised archives)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3159\" data-end=\"3369\">This is where you browse the actual scanned records\u2014volume to page images\u2014just like you would at the archive reading room, only without the bus ride and the closing time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3159\" data-end=\"3369\">It is a good habit to always take a look at the scanned records, as there may be error in the transcription. See my article <a href=\"https:\/\/martinroe.com\/blog\/a-word-of-warning\/\">A word of warning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3159\" data-end=\"3369\">Many of the results you find in Search for individuals contains a link named <strong><em>See scanned version.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>This is normally found in the upper left corner of the page you are in. Some material is only available as scanned images\u2014so switch to <strong data-start=\"5968\" data-end=\"5983\">Find source<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"5988\" data-end=\"6008\">Scanned material<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6053\" data-end=\"6266\"><strong data-start=\"6053\" data-end=\"6094\">What does \u201cForm\u201d mean in Find source?<\/strong><br data-start=\"6094\" data-end=\"6097\" \/>It\u2019s a practical filter for what kind of material you\u2019re dealing with (for example <strong data-start=\"6180\" data-end=\"6191\">Scanned<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"6193\" data-end=\"6207\">Searchable<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"6209\" data-end=\"6222\">Full text<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"240\">If Digitalarkivet still feels a little overwhelming after this, don\u2019t worry \u2014 that\u2019s normal.
