\u2074Every time I think about lutefisk, I don\u2019t picture a cosy Christmas table with candlelight and rosy cheeks. I\u2019m right back in a childhood kitchen, eyes watering, wondering if someone had boiled a fish and a cleaning product in the same pot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

Soothing Saturday<\/em> \u2014 is my little corner for slowing down and stepping away from my usual genealogy deep dives. Think of it as a gentle exhale at the end of the week \u2014 a space for reflections, small joys, and simple stories written just for the pleasure of it.<\/p>\n<\/div>And yet, I\u2019m Norwegian. I love tradition. I write about ancestors for fun.<\/p>\n

Welcome to this week\u2019s Soothing Saturday<\/strong>, where the coffee is strong, the air smells faintly of pine, and Christmas is sneaking up faster than I\u2019m ready for. The neighbour\u2019s lights are already twinkling, the grocery stores are humming \u201cDeilig er jorden,\u201d and somewhere out there, someone is enthusiastically preparing\u2026 lutefisk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Now, I know this may be risky to admit \u2014 especially in Norway, where lutefisk season is practically sacred \u2014 but I have to say it:
I hate lutefisk.<\/p>\n

There, it\u2019s out in the open.<\/p>\n

Every December, it starts the same way. The invitations roll in: \u201cWe\u2019re having lutefisk next weekend, you\u2019ll come, won\u2019t you?\u201d<\/em> The photos appear on social media \u2014 proud smiles beside steaming plates of translucent cod. And me? I nod politely and quietly hope someone will serve meatballs instead.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve tried to like it. I really have. Each year I give it another chance, usually armed with a heroic amount of bacon, peas, and butter sauce. I\u2019ve even tried psychological tricks \u2014 whispering encouragements to my plate (\u201cCome on, we can do this\u201d) and pretending it\u2019s just another kind of Christmas nostalgia. But no. Lutefisk still feels like something that escaped the lab before it was ready for dinner.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not that I dislike tradition. Quite the opposite \u2014 I love the flicker of candlelight, the snow on the window ledge, the smell of gingerbread and spruce, the sound of a children\u2019s choir from the radio. But some traditions are better admired from a safe distance, preferably from behind a cup of hot coffee.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the true believers sit in quiet reverence, eyes closed as they take the first bite, whispering things like, \u201cAh, this is Christmas.\u201d<\/em> I smile and agree \u2014 but my heart belongs firmly to the ribbe, pinnekj\u00f8tt, and a well-behaved medisterkake that doesn\u2019t slide away when you look at it.<\/p>\n

So this Soothing Saturday, while the brave among us prepare their annual encounter with gelatinous heritage, I\u2019ll be over here, wrapped in a blanket, sipping my coffee and enjoying the peace of knowing that Christmas joy comes in many forms \u2014 and not one of them has to be lutefisk.<\/p>\n

And honestly, that thought might be the most soothing thing of all.<\/p>\n

Whatever your position, I hope your weekend includes something warm, something comforting, and something that does not<\/em> wobble when you poke it.<\/p>\n
